Just what is Potted Potter?! Well, it’s a recap of the riveting Harry Potter series from book 1 all the way to book 7. This parody play is packed with plenty of humor but the plot stays true to the series. Harry Potter fanatics will get all the fan favorite moments, from learning spells to quidditch, his run ins with Voldemort, to Harry’s first love, and more. This hilarious rendition of the unbelievable story of a lifetime is all covered in a 70 minute performance delivered by three actors.

It’s the unofficial Harry experience but it’s oh so good! It’s a brilliant idea of bringing all seven books into one comedy-packed play. Originally, Potter Potter was performed by the writers, Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner, themselves in 2005. These two writers initially performed Potted Potter as a five-minute street show. It’s a swift recap of the groundbreaking Harry Pottter series that pretty much has become a cultural phenomenon. Soon enough, the show is garnering ultra long queues of Harry Potter fans who want to get a glimpse of this sensational skit!

The following year, Potted Potter expanded to an hour-long spectacle. The six books turned into a phenomenal parody of sorts. From Harry’s first brush with magic to his devastating first encounter with Voldemort. This incredible play has also acquired the interest of influential producers. By 2007, the theater piece embarked on a U.K. tour, where in the seventh book (which just came out at the time) was incorporated halfway into the trek. In 2009, the play became a worldwide hit. Hence, Dan and Jeff brought in performers to fill in the roles.

“The flavor is Monty Python meets Vaudeville” – The New York Times

Potted Potter has traveled across the world, from London’s West End to Off Broadway, to Australia, Asia, Mexico, Dubai, and more. Every time the show goes, waves of Harry Potter fans follow and the show is only getting better from here as producers bring out all the stops by continuously improving its stagecraft, deliver some brilliant improvisations, fantastic lightning, and most of all serve some unabashed slapstick humor.

The latest production of Potted Potter is led by director Richard Hurst and associate director, Hannah Berrigan. The creative team includes line producer Jared Harford, production relighter Andrew Haden, set designer Simon Scullion, lighting designer Tim Mascall, and composer and sound designer Phil Innes. Lastly, the show is produced by Olivier Award winning theatrical producer James Seabright.

Potted Potter may be a parody showdown but it’s nothing short of an amazingly funny recap of the world’s most beloved wizarding series. The play has garnered tons of accolades, including Laurence Olivier Award nominations for Best Entertainment and Best Family, and Whatonstage Award nomination for Best New Comedy.

It may seem simple to create a show with only two to three performers and a minimalist scenic and lighting design. But in truth, Potted Potter is more complex than one would imagine. For starters, creating a show that can be enjoyed by audiences at the age six to Dumbledore can be tricky. Also, the show pulls in some of the most dedicated, almost nitpicky Harry Potter fans, as well as casual viewers. Having to appeal to all types of audiences but still have them leaving the venue fully entertained can be a mighty challenging feat. But Potted Potter had no problem accomplishing this.

Moreover, the play has garnered some of the most glowing reviews from professional theater critics. The AU Review praised the play’s actors for “(doing) a wonderful job of maintaining the energy throughout, running to and fro like a couple of nifflers in search of shiny objects. Their character voices are sterotypical and obvious, their movements frenetic and playful.” The review continued to compliment Potted Potter for its hilarious take on the Harry Potter Saga. “It is an entertaining show and doesn’t require much of its audience. You will definitely have a laugh.”

Over at the Theatre Review, Potter Potter is revered for its fun, family-friendly entertainment. “Potted Potter is a great time for any budding Potterheads still in primary school. There were little smiles and uproarious laughter scattered throughout the theatre. Families are going to find the magic they are looking for.”

DC Theater Arts mentioned in their review, “Potted Potter is a short, energetic show full of heart.” The writer also continued to praise the show for being incredibly dynamic, “The performers’ commitment to their slapstick jokes makes their take on Harry Potter a spectacle for all ages, though it’s not a show that will stick with viewers for long after they leave the theater.”

Ultimately, it’s the fantastic humor that turns this show into an unforgettable spectacle, “After starting to read the books together as a family we all went to see Potted Potter and we absolutely loved it! You don’t need to be a fan or have read the books at all, but our little gang loved laughing together at parts we remembered reading. A must-see for fans or otherwise, “ says a viewer from Texas
