Yamato: Japan itself, the Japanese spirit.

Taiko: a broad range of Japanese percussion instruments.

Hito No Chikara: the power of human strength.

When The Drummers of Japan take the stage and play the Taiko drums with perfection, skill, passion, and craftsmanship, audiences are engulfed in sights, sounds, and sensations that awaken, stir, empower, invigorate, and enthrall. It is a forceful spectacle that is impossible not to get totally sucked into.

Yamato: The Drummers of Japan is a Taiko drumming group based in the Asuka-mura Nara Prefecture, also known as the hometown of Japan. Since their first performances in 1993, the group has not only given more than 4,500 shows across more than 54 countries but also presented workshops and Taiko drum lessons.

Taiko drums originated in Japanese culture as early as the 6th century CE, but when it comes to the Yamato group, it’s not only about keeping a musical tradition alive but also having a bit of fun while doing so. Yamato uses over 40 Taiko drums on stage, each with a different character and sound. Their largest drum has been named “Odaiko” – it has been manufactured from a massive tree over 400 years of age. It is a whopping 2 meters in diameter and weighs an insane 500 kilograms. The question is: How do they play an instrument like this? The answer: The Drummers of Japan’s bodies have been trained to the maximum, hence the term “physical music”. With over 40 drums playing together, one would expect a massive cacophony of pounding beats, but on the contrary, the “physical music” is not only explosive in sound but meticulously crafted and delicate, ranging in every emotion under the sun, from intense to sad, from comforting to comical.

While the unique blend of physical theatre, comedy, dance, audience participation, and raw energy take centre stage, Yamato: The Drummers of Japan also showcases the beauty of the different Taiko drums, the many sounds they can produce, and the different ways of playing.

The historical, luxurious Moore Theatre has been an integral part of Seattle’s cultural life since 1907 – the perfect host for the historical Taiko drums and their legendary players. The venue boasts seating for up to 1,800 patrons, spread across the main floor and balcony – perfect for every preference and budget.

Yamato: The Drummers of Japan is an absolute must-see, so get your tickets now!
