The Rizwan-Muazzam Qawwali is made up of the two lead singing brothers, Rizwan and Muazzam, and 5 secondary singers who lead the choral response with vigorous hand clapping, two harmonium players and a table player. They all perform in traditional Qawwali style, sitting on the ground rather than on seats, which brings them closer to God.
They have been performing since the late 1990’s and they performed at their first concert in 1998 at the Womad Rivermead festival in Reading, England which is where their music was first showcased to the world and have since had many joint performances at the coke studio in Pakistan. They sing all their songs in Persian, Urdu and Punjabi Languages which is bringing many people together with each word they sing.
When Rizwan and Muazzams uncle, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, sadly passed away in 1997 his two nephews stood up to the plate to take over his epic legacy, despite their youth at the time, only being teenagers they were still determined to keep their uncles pioneering efforts to transcend cultural, language and religious barriers going. They are fulfilling his wishes with each passing show and performance and bringing people of all different cultural, religious and language barriers together.
