Rhiannon Giddens is an American musician known for her electric folk music.in 2005 she spent her time participating in Scottish traditional music competitions where she specialised in Gaelic Lilting, this is such a difficult skill to pick up on, but she managed to do it perfectly. Composer, vocalist, and banjo virtuoso Rhiannon Giddens is perhaps the hardest working and most decorated woman in modern roots music—with two Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, and a MacArthur “Genius” grant to her credit.
She is a founding member of the multi award winning country, blues and old-time music band ‘the Carolina Chocolate Drops” where she was the lead singer, fiddle player as well as the banjo player. With multiple Grammys under her belt from the group she decided to go solo where she now has released five solo albums.
She released “Tomorrow is my Turn” in 2015 which has over nine million plays on Spotify, she then went on to release “Freedom Highway” in 2017 where just the leading song “At the Purchaser’s Option” has over five million plays. “Theres No Other” was released in 2019 and “They’re calling me home” in 2021. She recently released “You’re the one” in 2023 and in 2024 she released an album “American Railroad” with Silkroad ensemble.
In 2016 Rhiannon Giddens became the first American to be honoured as folk singer of the year at the BBC Radio 2 folk awards. Adding to her lists of awards, she was the first woman and person of colour to receive the Steve Martin Prize for excellence in Banjo and bluegrass award which is such a prestigious award! She also earned herself an honorary Doctor of letters from the University of Carolina as well as being awarded an honorary Doctor of Music from Princton University in 2023.
