Potted Potter emerged in 2005 when Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner were hired to perform a five-minute street performance outside a bookstore. The skit was meant to entertain Harry Potter fans queuing at midnight to buy the sixth installment of the series. After receiving much acclaim from viewers, the play expanded to a one-hour performance, then to a full 70-minute show. The once humble five-minute skit is now a worldwide phenomenon with performances in Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America.
Potted Potter, which condenses all seven books into a 70-minute show, has received wide critical acclaim. The show garnered positive reviews for its energetic plot and humorous storylines. DC Theatre Arts’ Elizabeth Ballou mentioned, "Potted Potter is a short, energetic show full of heart, even if it doesn't have much of a brain.” She continued that “the performers' commitment to their slapstick jokes makes their take on Harry Potter a spectacle for all ages, though it's not a show that will stick with viewers long after they leave the theater.”
Meanwhile, distinguished critic Lynd Gardner from the Guardian added that Potted Potter is “Sublimely potty and done with the lightest of touches.” She said the show’s daft two-person parody of JK Rowling's Harry Potter novels provides a blissful performance. Lastly, another critic, Peter Orvetti, mentioned that Potted Potter is packed with “silly wordplay” and has “enough corn for a Great Hall holiday feast.”
