STOMP has transformed the urban jungle and clutter into a musical and theatrical masterpiece. Picture a stage full of junk -- boxes, crates, trash cans, bin lids, matches, brooms, plastic bags -- think of yesterday's neighborhood trash being hauled and dumped onstage. So yes, even that old clunky kitchen sink and some plumbing tubes are part of this eclectic musical ensemble.
Stomp was the brainchild of Steve McNicholas and Luke Cresswell, who started as theatre and street comedy musical actors. Their act always included percussion instruments which later evolved into playing drum solo parts using dustbin lids. The original Stomp show had its debut in the summer of 1991 at a preview show at Bloomsbury Theatre in London and premiered at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh. Stomp quickly made some noise and was heard loud and clear among critic circles. Stomp bagged the Guardian's "Critic's Choice" and the "Best of the Fringe" award from the Daily Express. As they expanded their cast members to an eight-member performing unit and started touring the world, they garnered a nomination for the "Best Entertainment Award" from the Sir Laurence Olivier award body, and scored a win for "Best Choreography Award in a West End show".
In 1994, Stomp took on the Big Apple with a run at the Orpheum Theatre in New York City where they picked up an Obie Award and the Most Unique Theatre Experience from the Drama Desk Awards. Soon afterwards, Stomp became a household name as they invaded TV shows, TV advertising, movies, including a performance at Las Vegas' Planet Hollywood, the Oscars, the Emmy's, The Royal Variety Show, and the 2012 London Olympics.
The Chicago Tribune hails Stomp as "A PHENOMENAL SHOW! BASHING, CRASHING, SMASHING, SWISHING, BANGING AND KICKING – A JOYOUS INVENTION!”
Branded as G-rated or 'fun for the whole family', Stomp has humor and entertainment value accessible and relatable to kids, parents, and grandparents.
