Zakir Hussain is a man of many talents. He is an Indian Tabla Player, composer, percussionist, music producer and actor. He is widely considered as one of the best table players of all times and has many awards to prove his greatness including the Padma Shiri which he was awarded in 1988, the Padma Buushan, awarded in 2002 and most recently he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2023 all awarded by the government of India. Zakir Hussain has also been awarded the National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship, which is the highest award that can be given to any traditional artist and / or musician.
At the 51st Grammy Awards he won the Grammy in the contemporary world music album category alongside Mikey Hart and Giovanni Hidalgo for their collaborative album “Global Drum Project”. In 2016 Zakir Hussain was invited to the international jazz day 2016 all-star global concert at the White House by President Obama.
Zakir Hussain is appreciated both in the field of percussion and in the music world as an international phenomenon and as one of the worlds most esteemed and influential musicians of all times. He has recently won 3 Grammy awards in February of 2024, Global Music Performance, Contemporary Instrumental album and instrumental composition.
Zakir Hussain is an excellent educator as well! His yearly workshop in the San Francisco Bay Area is highly anticipated by performers and serious table players. He also conducts workshops and lectures in many universities including Princeton University and Stanford. Zakir Hussain was resident artistic director at SFJazz between 2013 and 2016, and was honored with SF Jazz’s Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes his “unparalleled contribution to the world of music”.
Hussain has had many incredible collaborations with artists such as Shakti, Remember Shakti, Masters of Percussion, Planet Drum and Global Drum Project with Mickey Hart, Tabla Beat Science, Sangam with Charles Lloyd and Eric Harland, CrossCurrents with Dave Holland and Chris Potter, in trio with Béla Fleck and Edgar Meyer, and, most recently, with Herbie Hancock.
