Terrence Blanchard is an American Trumpeter, Pianist and Composer that specializes in Jazz. He began playing piano at the young age of 5 and trumpet at the age of 8. Terence recorded his self-titled debut single which reached the number 3 position on the billboard Jazz Chart. He stated in an interview in 1994 “Writing for Film is fun, but nothing can beat being a Jazz musician, playing a club, playing a concert” which shows how much passion he puts into all his work and how he has fun whilst performing, no matter what the occasion is.
In 2006 he composed the score for Spike Lee’s 4 hour Hurricane Katrina documentary for HBO entitled “When the Levees broke; A Requiem in four parts”. And in the 2009 Disney film “The Princess and The Frog” he played all of the alligators (Louis) trumpet parts and he also voiced the roll of the band leader in the boat band (Earl). Apart from his movie and documentary roles, Terence Blanchard has recorded several award winning albums for Columbia, Sony Classical and Blue note records including “In My Solitude: The Billie Holiday Song Book” In 1994 and “Flow” in 2005.
In 2007 he performed at the Montery Jazz Festival and he was named the artist in residence and said he is “one of this generations most artistically mature and innovative artists”. In 2019 he performed alongside Lady Gaga as a special guest during her Jazz and Piano Show in Las Vegas. Terence Blanchard has won many awards for his soul stirring performances including improvised jazz solo in 2009, 2010, 2014 and 2022 as well as Jazz instrumental album in 2005 and 2022 with may more awards in between.
